Situated north of the Tombigbee River, Columbus is a Mississippi city that serves as the county seat for Lowndes County. The city lies about 140 miles north of Jackson and about 60 miles south of Tupelo. According to the 2000 census, Columbus has a population of 23,640 residents. Columbus was founded in 1821 as a result of the failure of a settlement across the Tombigbee River. The settlement, named Plymouth, was flooded and as a result Columbus was established on the other side of the river. Before Columbus was incorporated as a city it was informally referred to as Possum Town, a name given to the settlement by local Native Americans. During the American Civil War, Columbus housed an arsenal that made gunpowder, handguns, and cannons. Columbus was also known as a hospital town during the American Civil War.

There are many things to see and do in and around Columbus. The former home of author Tennessee Williams is situated on Main Street in Columbus and serves a museum and welcome center. The Hitching Lot and Farmers Market provide residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy local produce, crafts, baked goods, coffee, and more. The city is also home to over 125 restaurants, offering various dining options of all kinds.

Columbus and the surrounding area are known for mild winters and warm, humid summers. Individuals should invest in both cooling and heating systems to keep indoor temperatures comfortable during the warmer and cooler months of the year. Individuals will also want to have these systems inspected by an HVAC professional to ensure they are operating at their highest potential.
